Kundli matching (kundli milan) compares the birth charts of two people to judge marriage compatibility, and its best-known part is Ashtakoot Guna Milan, a score out of 36 points. A score of 18 or more is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage. However, the guna score is only the starting point: Nadi and Bhakoot doshas, Manglik status and the 7th house of both charts matter just as much.
This guide explains the 8 kootas, how many gunas should match, what Nadi and Bhakoot dosha mean, and why a full chart comparison is more reliable than the score alone.
What is Guna Milan (Ashtakoot Milan)?
Guna Milan is the North Indian system of matching based on the Moon’s nakshatra (birth star) and Moon sign of the bride and groom. It looks at eight areas, called kootas, and gives each a set number of points. Together they add up to 36 gunas. South India uses a similar system called Dasha Porutham with ten factors, but the idea is the same: check whether two minds and temperaments can live together well.
Because it is based on the Moon, guna milan mainly measures emotional, mental and physical compatibility. It does not by itself show financial stability, career, children’s timing or the strength of the marriage house; those come from the full chart.
The 8 kootas and their points
| Koota | Points | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual and ego compatibility, working nature |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and who influences whom |
| Tara (Dina) | 3 | Health and wellbeing of the couple, based on birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between Moon sign lords, mental wavelength |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional bond, family welfare and prosperity |
| Nadi | 8 | Health, genetics and progeny |
| Total | 36 |
Notice that the last three kootas, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, carry 21 of the 36 points. That is why problems in these three are taken seriously even when the total looks fine.
Kitne gun milne chahiye? (How many gunas should match?)
| Guna score | Traditional view |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Not recommended without careful chart analysis |
| 18 – 24 | Acceptable, average match |
| 25 – 32 | Good match |
| 33 – 36 | Very good match (rare) |
These ranges are guidelines. A couple with 28 gunas but a serious uncancelled Nadi dosha may need more thought than a couple with 20 gunas and strong, supportive charts. Equally, a very high score does not guarantee a happy marriage if the 7th house or Venus is badly afflicted in one chart.
Nadi Dosha explained
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha). When the bride and groom have the same nadi, Nadi koota gets 0 out of 8 points. This is called Nadi Dosha and is traditionally linked with health issues and concerns about children.
When is Nadi Dosha cancelled?
Traditional exceptions that astrologers commonly apply include:
- Both have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras
- Both have the same nakshatra but different Moon signs
- Both have the same nakshatra but different padas (quarters), in certain cases
- The Moon sign lords of both are the same or are friends
Rules vary between traditions, so whether a specific Nadi Dosha is cancelled should be decided by checking both charts.
Bhakoot Dosha explained
Bhakoot is based on how many signs apart the two Moon signs are. If the Moons are in a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship from each other, Bhakoot gets 0 points and the match is said to have Bhakoot Dosha.
- 2/12 – traditionally linked with money or expense issues
- 5/9 – linked with concerns about children
- 6/8 – the most serious, linked with disputes, health and separation
Bhakoot Dosha is commonly considered cancelled when both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet, or when their lords are friends. For example, Aries and Scorpio are both ruled by Mars, so the 6/8 relationship between them is usually not treated as a dosha.

Gana mismatch: Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa
Each nakshatra is classed as Deva (gentle), Manushya (human, balanced) or Rakshasa (intense, independent). Same gana gets full points. Deva with Rakshasa traditionally gets the lowest score and suggests very different temperaments. Gana mismatch alone is not a reason to reject a match, but couples should be aware that their natural reactions and expectations may differ.
Beyond the score: what a full kundli matching checks
A guna score can be generated by any software in seconds. A proper match looks deeper:
- Manglik status of both, with cancellations. See our guide to Manglik Dosha.
- 7th house and its lord in both charts, and Venus (and Jupiter for women in traditional practice).
- Dasha at the time of marriage – whether the planetary periods of both support marriage now.
- Saturn transits such as Sade Sati that might delay or test the early years.
- Longevity, health and children indications in both charts.
- Career and finances, especially if one partner will relocate. A career astrology view can help here.
Our marriage prediction and kundli matching service covers all of these, not just the 36-point score.
What you need for accurate kundli matching
Matching is only as good as the birth details behind it. Before you ask for a match, collect the following for both people:
- Date of birth as written on the birth certificate or in family records
- Exact time of birth, ideally from the hospital record. Even a difference of 10 to 15 minutes can change the ascendant and house positions, although the Moon nakshatra usually stays the same
- Place of birth (town or city), because the time zone and coordinates affect the chart
If the birth time is not known, an astrologer can still compare the Moon signs and nakshatras for guna milan, but house-based checks such as Manglik status and the 7th house become less reliable. In that case it is better to say so openly than to guess a time, so that the analysis can be read with the right level of caution.
What if very few gunas match?
A low score is a reason to look closer, not a final verdict. Sometimes the low score comes from kootas that are cancelled by other factors, or the individual charts are strong enough to carry the marriage. Sometimes the analysis confirms real challenges, and the family can decide with full information.
Traditional remedies for weak matches include worship of Lord Shiva and Parvati, Maha Mrityunjaya mantra for Nadi Dosha, charity, and specific pujas recommended after checking both charts. Gemstones should be considered only after a chart check of each person, never just because the match score is low.
Quick answers
What is a good guna milan score?
18 is the traditional minimum, 25 and above is considered good, and 33 or more is excellent.
Is kundli matching based on Moon sign or name?
Proper matching uses the Moon’s nakshatra and sign from the date, time and place of birth. Name-based matching is only a rough substitute when birth details are not known.
Is Nadi Dosha always serious?
It is taken seriously, but several traditional exceptions can cancel it. Both charts should be checked before deciding.
Can a marriage work with less than 18 gunas?
It can, if the individual charts and other factors are supportive. The score alone should not decide a marriage.
Do love marriages need kundli matching?
It is a personal choice. Many couples use it to understand each other’s strengths and to choose a good time for marriage, rather than to decide whether to marry.
