Foreign Settlement Yoga in Kundli: Will I Go Abroad? (Videsh Yog Guide)

A foreign settlement yoga in kundli is formed mainly when the 12th house (residence away from the birthplace) links with the lagna, the 4th house or the 9th house, often with Rahu, the Moon or Saturn involved, and the right dasha activates it. Travel abroad is common in many charts; settling abroad needs a stronger, repeated link between these houses.

This guide explains which houses and planets show videsh yog, how a short trip differs from study abroad and permanent residence (PR), how dasha timing works for visa and immigration questions, and how you can check the basics in your own birth chart step by step.

What is foreign settlement yoga in kundli?

Classical texts did not speak about Canada or Australia, but they did describe living far from one’s birthplace, crossing water and spending life in another land. Modern Vedic astrologers read these same indications as foreign travel and settlement. “Videsh yog” is simply the everyday name for a combination in the chart that promises time spent abroad.

Two points matter from the start. First, there is no single yoga that decides everything; astrologers look for several signs pointing the same way. Second, a promise in the chart only shows up when a matching dasha (planetary period) and supportive transits arrive. That is why one person goes abroad at 19 for study and another only at 35 for work, even though both charts show foreign links.

Houses that show foreign travel and settlement

12th house: foreign residence and settlement

The 12th house is the main house of living away from home. It covers distant lands, expenses, isolation and letting go of the familiar. When the lagna lord sits in the 12th, the 12th lord sits in the lagna, or the two exchange signs, the person often spends a large part of life away from the place of birth. A strong, well-connected 12th lord is one of the clearest signs of long-term residence abroad.

9th house: long journeys and higher study abroad

The 9th house rules long journeys, higher learning, teachers and fortune (bhagya). A link between the 9th and 12th houses is a classic pointer for going abroad for a degree or for luck to open up in a distant place. Many astrologers also note that a 9th–12th link gives fortune “away from home” rather than in the hometown.

7th house: travel, foreign spouse and business abroad

The 7th house is counted as a house of travel and of dealings with outsiders. A 7th lord in the 12th, or Rahu in the 7th, can point to a spouse from another culture or country, marriage leading to a move abroad, or trade with foreign clients. For spouse-visa questions, the 7th house is read together with the 12th.

3rd house: short travel

The 3rd house covers short trips, courage and personal effort. Strong 3rd house activity gives frequent travel, tours and short visits, which may include short foreign trips. On its own it does not show settlement. Interestingly, the 3rd house is also the 12th from the 4th, so it can show a loss of attachment to the home base.

4th house: leaving the homeland

The 4th house is home, mother, property and the motherland. For settlement abroad, astrologers often look for a 4th house that is under pressure, for example the 4th lord placed in the 12th, or Saturn, Rahu or the 12th lord influencing the 4th. This shows less connection to the native place. A very strong, unafflicted 4th house tends to keep a person rooted near home even when travel is promised.

Some astrologers also add the 8th house (sudden change and sea crossing in older texts) to the list. Different schools weigh it differently, but the 12th, 9th and 4th remain the core houses.

Planets of videsh yog: Rahu, Moon and Saturn

Rahu: the planet of foreign lands

Rahu represents what is foreign, unconventional and outside one’s own culture. Rahu in the 12th, 9th, 7th or lagna, or Rahu joined with the 12th lord, is one of the most common features in charts of people who live abroad. Rahu Mahadasha and Rahu Antardasha are frequently the periods when visas, moves and foreign jobs happen.

Moon and watery signs

The Moon is a moving, changeable planet and shows the mind’s restlessness. A Moon in the 12th or 9th, or a Moon in a watery sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) linked to the 12th, is traditionally read as journeys over water. Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) on key houses also add to the tendency to relocate.

Saturn: long-term residence and hard work abroad

Saturn is slow and stands for distance, labour and long-term structure. When Saturn is linked with the 12th or 4th house, it often gives a slower, more effortful path abroad, with paperwork delays but a stay that lasts. Many people who settle through years of work permits and PR applications have Saturn involved. Saturn’s transit over the 12th from the Moon (the first phase of Sade Sati) is also a known time for relocation.

Jupiter supports education and blessings abroad, especially through the 9th house, while Venus can show comfort and luxury in a foreign country. These are supporting factors rather than the main signals.

Travel vs study vs PR: how the chart differs

Many families in Punjab and Haryana come with one question: “Will my child get a study visa for Canada, Australia, the UK or the USA, and will they get PR after that?” These are really three different questions, and the chart answers them differently.

GoalMain housesKey planetsWhat to look for
Short trip or tourist visit3rd, 7th, 9thMoon, Mercury3rd or 9th activated by dasha; short, repeated travel
Study abroad9th, 12th, 4th, 5thJupiter, Mercury, Rahu9th–12th link; 4th (formal education) and 5th (learning) supported
Work visa or job abroad10th, 12th, 6thSaturn, Rahu, Sun10th lord linked to 12th; D10 Dashamsa confirms career abroad
Spouse visa or foreign marriage7th, 12thVenus, Rahu7th lord in 12th or Rahu on the 7th; D9 Navamsa supports
PR or permanent settlement12th, lagna, 4thSaturn, Rahu, MoonLagna lord–12th lord link; 4th house under pressure; repeated over D1 and D9

A chart may clearly show study abroad but only a weaker promise for settlement, in which case the person may return home after some years. Another chart may show little interest in education but strong 10th–12th links, so work becomes the route. This is why a focused career astrology reading is often useful alongside the foreign question.

An honest note: visas and PR are decided by documents, eligibility, language scores, funds and the immigration law of that country. Astrology cannot override a refusal or replace a good consultant or a complete file. What it can do is show whether the period is supportive, when effort is more likely to succeed, and whether settlement or a temporary stay is the stronger promise.

Dasha timing for visa and immigration

Even a strong videsh yog needs the right time. In the Vimshottari dasha system, the periods most often linked with going abroad are:

  • Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha, especially when Rahu sits in or influences the 12th, 9th or 7th.
  • The dasha of the 12th lord, or of a planet placed in the 12th house.
  • The dasha of the 9th lord for study, or of the 10th lord connected to the 12th for work.
  • Combined periods where the Mahadasha lord and Antardasha lord between them connect the 9th, 12th and lagna. This is often when the file actually moves.

Transits add a second layer. Jupiter or Saturn moving over the 12th or 9th house (counted from the lagna or the Moon) often coincides with applications, approvals or the actual move. Saturn entered Pisces on 29 March 2025 and is expected to move into Aries around 2027, so it is worth checking which of your houses Pisces occupies. Exact dates for your case need your own chart, so check the current transit against your dasha rather than going by a sign-wise forecast.

Since marriage and moving abroad often come together for young people, the timing of both can be read side by side; our guide on when you will get married explains the marriage side.

How to check videsh yog in your own kundli

You need an accurate birth chart (date, time and place of birth). Then go step by step:

  1. Find the 12th house and its lord. Note which sign is in the 12th, which planet rules it, and where that planet sits.
  2. Check the link with the lagna. Is the lagna lord in the 12th, the 12th lord in the lagna, or are they together, in aspect or in exchange? This is the strongest settlement pointer.
  3. Look at the 9th and 4th houses. A 9th–12th link supports study or fortune abroad. A 4th lord in the 12th, or a 4th house hit by Saturn or Rahu, shows distance from the homeland.
  4. Locate Rahu, the Moon and Saturn. Note whether they sit in or aspect the 12th, 9th, 7th or 4th, and whether the Moon is in a watery sign.
  5. Repeat in the D9 Navamsa. If the same links show up in D9, the promise is firmer. For job-based moves, check the D10 Dashamsa too.
  6. Check your running dasha. Is the Mahadasha or Antardasha lord connected to the 12th, 9th or Rahu? If not, the yoga may be waiting for a later period.
  7. Look at the current transit of Jupiter and Saturn over your 12th and 9th houses to narrow down the window.

If you find two or three of these pointing the same way, foreign travel is likely promised. Telling travel apart from settlement, and pinning down the year, needs a closer look at strength, aspects and dasha sequence. Our online kundli reading covers all of these together.

Myths about foreign settlement in astrology

  • “Rahu in the 12th means you will definitely settle abroad.” Not on its own. Rahu in the 12th raises the chance, but settlement needs support from the lagna, the 4th house and the dasha.
  • “No videsh yog means you can never go abroad.” A trip or a few years of study can happen with milder indications. The chart shows the strength and duration of the stay, not a simple yes or no.
  • “A puja or gemstone will get the visa approved.” No remedy replaces correct documents, eligibility and the law. Simple remedies such as mantra, charity and discipline can steady the mind during a long process, and a gemstone should be considered only after a chart check.
  • “A visa refusal means the chart has no foreign yoga.” Refusals often happen in a weak sub-period, or for purely practical reasons in the file. Many people succeed later in a better dasha after fixing what was missing.
  • “Settling abroad is always good luck.” Not for every chart. For some people the 12th house abroad brings growth; for others, the stronger fortune is near home. A good reading tells you which way your chart leans.

Quick answers

Which house is responsible for foreign settlement?

The 12th house is the main house for living abroad, supported by the 9th (long journeys), the 4th (leaving the homeland) and the lagna (the self).

How do I know if I will go abroad, astrologically?

Check whether the lagna or 9th house is linked to the 12th, where Rahu and the Moon sit, and whether your current dasha activates these houses. Several matching signs give a stronger answer than any single placement.

Which dasha is good for going abroad?

Rahu dasha and the dasha of the 12th lord are the most common, along with the 9th lord for study. The best period depends on how these planets are placed in your own chart.

Does Rahu give foreign settlement?

Rahu is the main significator of foreign lands, so a Rahu link to the 12th, 9th or 7th house often supports a move abroad. Permanent settlement still needs the 12th house and lagna to agree.

Can astrology tell if I will get PR in Canada?

Astrology can show whether long-term settlement is promised and which period is supportive. The PR decision itself depends on your eligibility, documents and immigration rules.

Is there a foreign spouse yoga in kundli?

Yes. A 7th lord in the 12th, Rahu in the 7th, or a strong 7th–12th link can show a spouse from another country or marriage leading to a move abroad. Our marriage prediction reading looks at this in detail.

A general article can list the combinations, but it cannot weigh them for you. Whether your chart shows a short stay, study, work or permanent settlement, and which year the dasha supports, depends on your exact lagna, house lords, Navamsa and running periods. Two people with Rahu in the 12th can have completely different outcomes.
